West Islip is a hamlet and CDP located in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Situated on the South Shore of Long Island, the population of the CDP was 28,335 at the time of the 2010 census.

Demographics of West Islip

As of the census of 2000, there were 28,907 people in 8,833 households in the CDP. The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.9% White, 1.1% Asian, 0.4% Black, 0.1% Native American, and 0.5% from other races, and 1.0% being multiracial.

There were 7,591 families out of which 43.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.4% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.5% were non-families. 11.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.21 and the average family size was 3.47.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $101,623,[5] and the median income for a family was $107,736. Males had a median income of $65,440 versus $37,185 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $37,151. About 2.3% of families and 2.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.4% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.
